In recent years, lemons have been actively cultivated in greenhouses across Central Asia. They are particularly widespread in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, where they yield abundant harvests. In Uzbekistan, consistent measures are being taken to reform the management system in the lemon-growing sector, expand the areas of lemon plantations, and increase production and export volumes by cultivating varieties that are suited to the local climate and transportation.
Today, specialists in Uzbekistan focus on growing new varieties of citrus seedlings in both greenhouses and open fields, as well as producing grafted saplings (two-year-old plants selected for planting). Special attention is given to combating diseases and pests. Scientists working in laboratories and greenhouse experts are developing lemon varieties suitable for export and transportation to other countries.
Researchers from the M. Mirzayev Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture, Viticulture, and Winemaking are studying the morphological characteristics of local varieties and introducing high-yielding, export-oriented ones. According to them, two high-yielding varieties, "Meer" and "Uzbekistan," are recommended for cultivation in greenhouses and trenches. These varieties produce early harvests.
